Answers to the most asked questions about Doula Training
Nov 18, 2024It's Q&A time!
Are you thinking about becoming a doula and have some questions? You’re not alone! At Nurturing Birth, we often receive questions from people exploring this fulfilling path.
Here are some answers to the most common questions we hear:
What is a doula?
A doula provides emotional, physical, and informational support to families during pregnancy, birth, and the early postnatal period. Their role is to offer reassurance, comfort, and guidance, helping families feel empowered. Doulas work alongside healthcare providers, but their primary focus is on the well-being and experience of the family, ensuring they feel supported every step of the way.
What do you cover on your course?
We cover everything you need to work as a birth and/or postnatal doula. Exploring doula support throughout the perinatal period. Each doula is treated as an individual and encouraged to explore their own doula practice as there is no “one size fits all” with Nurturing Birth, we are all unique and so are you.
Do you help with business support?
Yes! We look at how to set up and run a sustainable business, we want you to thrive! We look at setting yourself up, charging, marketing, accounts, expenses and so much more.
Is Nurturing Birth inclusive?
Absolutely. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and respectful community where everyone—regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, or background—is welcomed and supported. Come on in, you’ll get a warm welcome.
Does it matter that I haven’t got children/didn’t breastfeed?
No, you don’t. Being a doula is about the support, empathy, kindness, and professionalism you bring to the families you serve. A good doula draws on their ability to connect and support, not solely on personal experiences. In fact, many of our doulas have not had children themselves.
Can I be a doula if I have a young family?
Absolutely! Many doulas successfully balance their work with raising young children. Doula work can be flexible, and you can set boundaries that suit your family’s needs. A supportive network, good planning, and open communication can make it entirely possible to thrive as a doula while caring for a young family. We cover this on our course.
Am I too old/too young to train?
Not at all! We’ve trained doulas as young as 17 and well into their 70s. There’s a place for every doula, and the right clients will be drawn to what makes you uniquely you, regardless of age.
I have specific learning requirements, will I be able to complete the training?
Yes, absolutely. We strive to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment, and we’re committed to working with you to ensure your individual needs are met. If you have specific learning requirements, please let us know so we can provide any necessary accommodations and help you succeed in your doula training journey.
