The Emotional Side of Being a Doula
Jun 05, 2025Being a doula is deeply fulfilling, but let’s talk about the emotional side. The highs, the challenges, and how to care for yourself.
The Highs: The Pure Joy of Support
There’s nothing a doula loves more than seeing a birthing person feel truly empowered, witnessing their strength, and knowing you played a part in their journey.
The Lows: Holding Space for Difficult Moments
Not every birth goes as planned. Sometimes, you’ll witness disappointment, fear, or grief. Learning to hold space without carrying the weight yourself is key.
The Unexpected Emotions
You might cry happy tears… and sometimes, sad ones. You might feel deeply connected to your clients or struggle when a birth brings up personal emotions. You are human, not a robot.
The Balance: Giving Without Emptying Your Cup
Doulas are natural givers, but it’s easy to give too much. Learning to set emotional boundaries is vital for your well-being. We talk about this A LOT on our courses.
Self-Care is Non-Negotiable
✔️ Rest and recover after births
✔️ Find a trusted support system
✔️ Do things that refill your energy
Lean on Your Doula Community
Having people who get it makes all the difference. Surround yourself with other doulas who can offer guidance, understanding, and support. Your NB community will always have your back.
Processing Your Experiences
Birth work can be intense. Taking time to reflect, debrief, and acknowledge your emotions helps you grow without feeling emotionally drained. Mentoring plays a big part of the Nurturing Birth journey.

Remember: Doulas are doing incredible work. Your heart, your energy, and your presence make a difference. Keep shining.
For any doula at any stage of the doula journey we want to nurture you and give you a safe space in which to be heard, supported and affirmed.
On-going mentoring is beneficial to anyone working as a doula. Just as we support families, we too need to be supported ourselves.
Mentoring is about creating a trusted relationship with someone who has already ‘walked the path’. It is a valuable space to reflect and review where we have come from, where we are now and where we hope to be.
Our mentoring has been developed to give doulas the opportunity to expand, develop and gain confidence.
