Nurturing Birth Doula Training: Why doulas train with us!

courses doula Oct 31, 2022

After every Nurturing Birth doula training course, we ask for feedback from the participants, and the themes are the same every time. We thought that we’d share some of these with you, as you try to decide which doula training company you want to train with, in your journey to your new doula career.

We hope that this helps to give you more of a feel of who we are at Nurturing Birth, and our ethics and values.

Nurturing Birth is a safe space to learn to train to be a doula, and to be a doula...

What do we mean by a safe space? Many things! But let’s look at a few of them.

  1. Everyone who trains as a doula with Nurturing Birth is supported to ask any question that they want, without judgement. This is empowering and exciting, as people can really explore topics or experiences that they may not have had anyone to talk to about, or didn’t know who to ask!
  2. Nurturing Birth is inclusive. We provide a welcoming and nurturing space for learning, and we are genuinely concerned that everyone feels included.
  3. Nurturing Birth supports different learning needs and is able to discuss with individuals how they can be supported to learn and complete their course.
  4. Teaching and modelling privacy for those within a training course, and in the wider world, such as confidentiality and discretion regarding what clients share with us, helps to keep Nurturing Birth a safe space.
  5. Nurturing Birth values of compassion, respect and community shine through all our offers – we are so proud that our space remains a respectful one even when challenging topics are raised and discussed.

Quality of teaching and the experience of our facilitators is second to none.

Nurturing Birth doula training was established in 2005. Since then, we have trained over 3000 doulas across the world!  Our facilitators and mentors come from many different countries, cultures and backgrounds.

The facilitators on our training courses have decades of experience between them as doulas and are all still actively working with families.  They have each been through facilitator and mentor training and regularly meet for reflection and debriefing sessions, with a view to improving the quality of courses.

The Nurturing Birth Manual, a large A4 folder of important and relevant evidence-based information for doulas is regularly referred to by our doulas as their “bible”!  Updated annually it is packed with resources for doulas, not only information about the perinatal period but also aspects of business, so crucial for those starting out.

We have over 20 specialist contributors who we have worked with to curate content for our Expansive Course.

Mentoring is, uniquely, an integral part of our courses

We believe so strongly in the power of mentoring that we include mentoring sessions as part of our doula training, so that you can get a feel of the value you’ll get from mentoring as a practising doula.

Mentoring is an important part of everyone’s doula journey, no matter how experienced they are. In fact, some of the most experienced doulas are those most committed to regular mentoring sessions.

We doula you after you’ve trained as a doula with us!

After you’ve finished your doula training course with Nurturing Birth, you’ll find a whole world of support available to you in what has often been described as the Nurturing Birth family!

Our weekly Virtual Cuppa meetings are popular online get-togethers, where we put the birth world to rights, either over a specific topic (or challenge that someone might have), or a more general chat.

Our supportive private Facebook group gives you exclusive access to hundreds of experienced doulas, as well as notifications of offers and opportunities from Nurturing Birth.

At Nurturing Birth we encourage continued personal development and we will support you to do this by running workshops and sign-posting to other relevant training opportunities.

All doulas that finish a Nurturing Birth doula training course get to list themselves on the Nurturing Birth Directory, so that potential clients can find them.

We model what we feel is important to all doulas

– When we look after ourselves

– When we listen and hold space

– When we provide non-judgmental support

– When we engage in regular mentoring
