Debunking the Myths: What Doula Work is Really About
Nov 04, 2024When you hear the word "doula," what comes to mind? Many people have heard of doulas but may not fully understand what we do or who we serve. There are some common misconceptions about doula work, which can sometimes prevent people from considering the support a doula offers or as training to become one themselves.
Let’s take a closer look at a few of these myths and clarify the real scope of doula support.
Myth 1: Doulas Are Only for Home Births
Many people assume that doulas are only present at home births, supporting parents who want a more "natural" birth experience. But this couldn’t be further from the truth! Doulas support clients in all birth settings—hospitals, birthing centers, and yes, home births too. Our goal is to support our clients, no matter where they choose to bring their baby into the world. Whether it’s a medicated birth, a caesarean, or a water birth, doulas are there to provide continuity, support, and informational guidance every step of the way.
Myth 2: Doulas Replace Medical Professionals
Another common misconception is that doulas perform medical tasks or make decisions on behalf of the birthing person. In reality, doulas work alongside medical professionals, not in place of them. We don't perform clinical tasks like taking blood pressure or checking dilation; instead, we focus on emotional, physical, and informational support. We help parents understand their options, communicate with their medical team, and feel empowered to make the best choices for themselves and their families.
Myth 3: Doulas Are Just for First-Time Parents
Some might think that doulas are mainly for first-time parents who are unfamiliar with birth. However, every birth experience is unique, and parents—even those with previous births—can benefit greatly from the personalised support a doula provides. Many parents choose a doula for each birth, as their needs, preferences, and circumstances evolve. Doulas offer continuity of care, adapting to what each individual family needs, whether it’s their first child or their fifth.
Myth 4: Hiring a Doula is a Luxury or "Extra" Expense
Some people think of doulas as an "extra" or even a luxury only available to those with higher incomes. In truth, many doulas are committed to making their services accessible and may offer flexible payment plans, sliding scales, or community programs. Doulas also help clients prepare emotionally and practically, which can reduce stress and increase confidence in the birthing process—a support that can be invaluable, regardless of budget.
Myth 5: Doulas Have All the Answers
Lastly, some expect doulas to be the ultimate experts on every pregnancy and birth-related question. While we are trained to sign-post to a wealth of information and resources, a big part of our role is to support parents to find and trust their own instincts and knowledge. Instead of offering all the answers, we encourage clients to explore what feels right for them and support them in making informed decisions.
As doulas, our role is to meet families where they are and help create a safe, empowering environment for them to welcome their baby. Doula work is deeply rewarding, but it’s also often misunderstood. By clarifying what we do - and what we don’t do - we hope to make this type of support more accessible and understood.
