Hi, my name is Melanie.  I live in Wiltshire/Gloucester, I have four grown up children and five grandchildren (and counting).  Having experienced some difficult circumstances with the births of two of my children I am fully committed to supporting other mothers during their birthing experiences.

I heard about the role of a doula on the radio and knew straightway that it was the perfect role for me.  I became a doula in 2010 and have supported many mothers with a wide range of birthing experiences. I have also worked extensively as a post-natal doula. I have found this immensely rewarding personally and I would like to help other doulas at the beginning of their journey, as their mentor.

I was, until very recently, also a driving instructor, which meant my hours were flexible and I was therefore able to do two jobs side by side, but doulaing is my passion so I have recently given up the driving instruction so that I can follow my passion 100% .
I believe that every woman should be able to follow her instincts and birth as naturally as is possible, making informed decisions regarding her and her baby’s care. I can listen all day long to the issues raised by mothers or their birthing stories.  Previously, I also volunteered for Homestart, supporting vulnerable families with children aged from birth to five years which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I had two mentors which introduced me to very different styles of mentoring and helped me to develop my own style.  The experience was fantastic and extremely helpful in understanding the issues faced in ante-natal, birth and post-natal situations.  My approach is straightforward and direct. I will listen to you and we can discuss how any issues might be addressed. I am here to give you guidance and support as appropriate.  Each person is unique with their own set of circumstances and I believe it is essential to listen carefully to each person’s story.

Outside of work I like to cook, nothing too flamboyant, but I find it therapeutic. I also like to swim, read, and spend a lot of time exploring the Cotswolds as I have only recently moved to the Wiltshire/Gloucester area.

As your mentor I will help you develop your own style as a doula.  It is important that you find an approach with the techniques that work for you and your clients.  It is a privilege to be a mentor as much as it is to be a doula.  The most wonderful thing about being a doula is that is a never-ending journey of discovery and learning.  The same is true of being a mentor.  My mentors helped guide, nurture and encouraged me at the start of my journey and I offer the same support to my mentees.
