What are you actually looking for from a doula community?
Sep 17, 2026It's a question worth sitting with before you train, not after.
The training is the easy part to picture. You can imagine the course, the manual, the certificate on the wall.
What's harder to picture – and far more important – is what happens after.
- Who do you turn to when you've just taken on your first client and the imposter syndrome is rearing it’s ugly head?
- Who do you talk to about the client relationship that's gone quietly, uncomfortably wrong?
- Who reminds you, on the weeks it all feels like too much, that you're not the only one who's ever felt that way?
When I trained as a doula in 2009, I was the only one in my town. Nobody around me knew what a doula even was, let alone what it meant to build a business as one. That kind of isolation doesn't have to be part of the deal any more – but only if the community you join is actually built to hold you, not just to wave you off after graduation.
So – what are you looking for?
A few ideas, if you're not sure yet...
You're looking for somewhere ongoing.
Not a one-off catch-up, not a group that goes quiet after the course ends. Something with a heartbeat – on every week, whether you turn up or not, so it's there the moment you need it.
We call it the Virtual cuppa, that’s exactly what it is. make a brew, settle on the sofa and join the weekly online meeting for ALL Nurturing Birth doulas and trainees.
You're looking for somewhere with no rules about how often you show up.
Weekly regular or once-in-a-blue-moon dipper-in – both are exactly right. Some doulas are there every single week. Others pop in when something's come up and they haven't been seen in months. Both get the same warm welcome. There's no such thing as too often, and no such thing as not often enough. it’s an open invitation with your name on it.
You're looking for real conversations, not surface-level networking.
The kind of space where the topics are the actual stuff of doula work – celebrating a new client sign-up one week, talking through a tricky contract the next, working out how to navigate a client relationship that's got complicated.
Recent weeks alone have covered supporting clients through caesareans, night work, interviewing, IVF clients, working with a disengaged partner, insurance, loss, and back-up doula arrangements. Nothing is off the table, because nothing about this work is off the table.
You're looking for people who've stood exactly where you're standing.
It doesn't matter if you're not quite ready to start, gearing up for your very first client, or years into the work – there's always something to learn from someone else in that (virtual) room, and always someone who's already walked the bit of the path you're on. Being a doula is a journey, not a destination - we’re always learning and evolving.
And you're looking for somewhere that fits around your actual life.
No pressure to stay the full hour. Pop in, listen, take what you need, and go when you need to. A doula community should understand better than anyone that your time isn't always your own, sometimes you’re focus is elsewhere. That’s ok.
Community is at the heart of Nurturing Birth and nowhere will you find a more welcoming place to sit with other doulas than the Virtual Cuppa.
Weekly, free, welcoming and safe. A space that every doula has an open invitation to, for as long as they're doing this work, and even when their not. Because training you is only half the job, being there when you need us is the other half.
Does that feel like the kind of community you’re searching for?
