Doula Spotlight: Carole

blog doulaspotlight Oct 22, 2026

Carole, is a birth and postnatal doula and mum of 3, living on the beautiful East Sussex/Kent border. She trained with Nurturing Birth in 2017 and became a mentor on our team in 2022.

Carole strives to be the doula that she wished she’d all those years ago when she was raining her own family. Providing hands on practical support, reassurance, and helping Mums relax and gain confidence in their new role.

Outside of doula life she loves yoga & paddle boarding. She also loves to cook (especially anything with chocolate as a main ingredient!) as well as a good old sing-song in the car and a kitchen disco...

Your name and location

Carole East Sussex/Kent

How long have you been a doula?

Since 2017

What inspired you to train?

Training to be a doula had been on my mind for years, but after turning 40 and seeing a really close friend face the same parenting challenges I had many years previously, pushed me to finally do it.

What has been your proudest moment as a doula so far?

My proudest moments are generally the quiet ones - when someone realises their own strength and I get to stand beside them when it happens

What has been the most rewarding part of building your doula business?

Getting to spend time with the most incredible and inspiring women - clients, fellow doulas and those working in and around maternity/antenatal and postnatal services

How has being a doula impacted your life? (personally, professionally, or both)

Personally it's been soul filling, professionally it's been purpose giving

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned since becoming a doula?

That every birth, every baby and every parent is completely unique

What do you enjoy most about your doula work?

Supporting women to build their confidence in themselves and their parenting

What values guide the way you work with your clients?

No judgement, just evidence based, hands on practical and emotional support

What do you think sets you apart as a doula?

My postnatal support is open ended. Families deserve the time and space they need, which means no pressure, no deadlines to reach certain milestones, just steady, consistent care for as long as required

Have you formed friendships or connections with other birth-workers local to you?

Yes, and these connections are so important to me. I feel very lucky to be based in an area with an active, welcoming and supportive doula network

What has surprised you most about being a doula?

That it's often the simplest things that matter the most

What’s your favourite part of a typical day as a doula?

It's making connections - with Mums, babies and other family members

What would you say to someone who is considering becoming a doula but isn’t sure if it’s right for them?

Speak to a few doulas and hear their experiences

If you could go back to the start of your doula journey, what advice would you give yourself?

Trust your instincts, stop second guessing and believe in yourself more

What's your favourite self-care treat?

Frivolous, fabulous, non essential shopping! It's not practical but very joyful!

What's your favourite "birthy" podcast

The imaginary one that I keep dreaming of launching!
